Honeycomb is often used for sealing the ends of rotor blades (for friction and wear resistance) for two main reasons:
-
They create a seal for the gas path, stopping hot engine gases from escaping around the turbine blade tips.
-
They offer a surface that can wear down a bit if the fast-spinning blade rubs against it.
When these seals work well, engines use less fuel, and all the spinning parts last longer.
Blaze can manufacture honeycomb seals using metallic honeycombs and back plates made from various materials, all tailored to what customers need, and they offer a complete service from start to finish.
