Honeycomb seals are made by joining a back plate (which faces the engine casing) with a metallic honeycomb (a brush-like part that faces the turbine blade tip). This design helps close the gap where air can escape between moving parts, making the engine more efficient. That’s why they’re commonly found in both the cool and hot sections of gas turbines and aircraft engines.

Honeycomb is often used for sealing the ends of rotor blades (for friction and wear resistance) for two main reasons:
  1. They create a seal for the gas path, stopping hot engine gases from escaping around the turbine blade tips.
  2. They offer a surface that can wear down a bit if the fast-spinning blade rubs against it.
When these seals work well, engines use less fuel, and all the spinning parts last longer.
